Build me an open source terminal coding assistant that feels like a real pair programmer, not just a chat box. I want it to be able to read and edit files, run shell commands, help with Git, and keep memory across sessions so when I come back later it still understands the project and what it was doing.

It should have a few working modes, one for actually building, one for read only planning, and one that can follow a spec and coordinate bigger tasks. I also want automatic checkpoints, simple project memory, scratch notes, and task progress tracking so long jobs can pause and resume cleanly. Let it spin up helper agents when useful, and support a stop condition where it checks whether the job is really finished before stopping.
