Build me a simple real time chat app like the demo in this repo, with a Django backend and a React frontend.

I want users to be able to sign in, see a list of contacts, open a chat with another user, and send messages that show up instantly without refreshing. It should use Channels and Redis for the live updates, and it should be easy to run locally with clear setup steps for the backend and frontend.

Please keep it close to a tutorial style project, not a full production system. I still want the basic Django admin setup to work so I can create users and contacts there. If anything is missing or outdated, use the current docs online and make reasonable choices. Also include whatever is needed so I can build it for deployment and run it locally without too much hassle.
