Build me a free desktop video editor that works on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

I want a clean app where I can import video, audio, and images, arrange them on a timeline, cut and trim clips, add transitions and basic effects, and export the finished video. It should feel like a real non linear editor, with a preview window, timeline controls, project management, and support for common editing workflows. If possible, make it take advantage of the GPU for smoother playback and rendering.

Keep it open source and make it easy to run on the three major operating systems. Use the existing project if it helps, but I mainly want a working editor that looks polished and is usable enough to test, even if some advanced features are still rough. If you need to check current docs or best practices online while building it, go ahead.
