xmake-io/xmake ? reverse-engineered prompt

Build me a lightweight cross platform build tool for C and C plus plus projects that uses a simple Lua config file. I want it to be easy to set up, work on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and let me build, run, and test projects from the command line without a lot of fuss.

It should support defining targets in a clean readable way, choosing debug or release builds, switching platform and architecture, and handling common dependencies through a built in package manager. If possible, also make it able to generate project files for other build systems when needed, and support common compilers and toolchains so it feels flexible for real world use.
